Bed and Breakfast in Wick

Harbour House
Contact / Location

Harbour House is located in Pultenytown on the south side of Wick. It was home to the Harbour Masters of Wick and Pulteney harbours and has been refurbished. We are nearby Weatherspoons, and have a selection of fine restaurants including Bord De L’Eau (French) No1 Bistro (MacKay’s Hotel), Spice Tandoori (Indian) Curry House (Indian) Raymond Chef (Chinese).

Wick is approx 25 minutes from John O’Groats This makes it an ideal rest stop before catching the Gills Bay ferry which takes about 1 hour to reach Orkney. There is much to do and see in Wick; you can visit the Heritage Museum, the Pulteney Distillery or the Old Man of Wick and surrounding area. There are hill walks to Camster cairns burial grounds, which are over 5000 years old, and the Castle of Mey which was the summer residence of the Queen Mother is located not far from John O’Groats.

Pulteneytown was so named after the death of Sir William Pulteney in 1805 and became a major player in the 19th century herring boom. It was built in order to supply work to the Gaels evicted during the Highland Clearances. During this boom period the harbour was expanded still further by local shipbuilder James Bremner. History of this era is preserved in the collections of Wick Heritage Museum.

As created by the British Fisheries Society, Pulteneytown consisted of Lower Pulteney and Upper Pulteney. Lower Pulteney was primarily a working area, built on a sandbank behind the harbour.
